Finding the right contraceptive for you
With so many contraceptive options available, from the pill and implant to injections, IUDs and non-hormonal methods, it can be hard to know where to start. Our GPs talk through your health history, your plans and your preferences before recommending an option, and we are happy to revisit the conversation if what you are using is not working for you.

Your consultation
Your GP will ask about your medical history, any medications, and what matters most to you, whether that is convenience, avoiding hormones, or managing a condition like heavy periods alongside contraception. There is no pressure to decide on the spot.
If you decide on a method that needs a procedure, such as an IUD or implant, we will book a separate appointment with enough time set aside and explain what to expect beforehand.
Booking an appointment
A standard consultation is enough to start the conversation. If you already know which method you are interested in, mention it when you book so your GP can prepare.
- Bring a list of any current medications
- Mention if you are also managing period pain or heavy bleeding
- Let reception know if you would prefer a female GP
- Follow-up appointments are available if you change your mind
- Emergency contraception is available as a separate same-day service
If cost is a concern, ask reception about our fees. Health Care Card and pension card holders receive a discount on standard consultations, and children 12 and under are bulk billed.
Ongoing care
Contraception is not a set-and-forget decision. Your GP will check in at review appointments to see how you are going, and it is fine to switch methods if your circumstances or preferences change.

- Side effects are worth discussing rather than just stopping
- Records are kept with your regular GP for continuity
If you are planning a pregnancy in future, it is worth mentioning that too. Your GP can advise on timing and pre-conception care alongside your current contraception.

- Cervical screening can often be arranged at the same visit
- Sexual health checks available if relevant
- Family planning and maternity care continues here if needed
