Ear wax removal, the traditional way.
Blocked or itchy ears cleared with gentle water irrigation, performed by our nursing team under GP oversight, so you are not sent elsewhere for something we can do here.
What ear wax removal with water involves
Ear wax removal by irrigation uses a gentle, pulsed flow of warm water to loosen and flush built up wax from the ear canal. It is a common, well established way to clear wax that is causing blocked hearing, itching or discomfort, and most people find it quick and comfortable once the wax has been softened beforehand.
- Performed by our practice nurses under GP oversight
- Best for wax that has been softened with drops beforehand
- Usually takes 10 to 15 minutes per ear
- Suitable for most adults and children with an intact eardrum
- Both ears can usually be treated in the same visit

During your appointment
Your nurse will check inside your ear with an otoscope first to see how much wax is present and confirm irrigation is the right approach. Warm water is then passed gently into the ear canal using a small electronic irrigator, which loosens the wax so it can be washed out into a collection basin. You may feel a trickling sensation and hear some noise, but it should not be painful.
Once the wax is cleared, your nurse will check your ear canal and eardrum again to make sure everything looks clear and healthy before you leave.

Preparing for your visit
The best results come from softening the wax before your appointment. Use olive oil or a pharmacy ear drop as advised by reception for three to five days beforehand, applied a few drops at a time into the affected ear or ears.
- Use softening drops for several days before your appointment
- Let us know about any ear surgery, perforation, or grommets
- Mention any recent ear infections or discharge
- Wear something you do not mind getting a little damp
- Bring a list of your current medications

Looking after your ears afterwards
Most people notice clearer hearing straight away. Your ears may feel a little wet or ticklish for the rest of the day, which is completely normal.
- Dry your ears gently after your appointment
- Avoid cotton buds, which push wax further in
- Contact us if you notice pain, dizziness, or new hearing loss
- Ask reception about ongoing softening drops if wax builds up again
If wax tends to build up regularly, your GP or nurse can talk you through a simple routine to help manage it between visits.

Questions patients ask us about ear wax removal
No, you can book directly with our nursing team for ear wax removal. Let reception know if you are not sure whether irrigation is right for you.
It should not be painful. Most people feel a mild trickling or bubbling sensation, and some report light-headedness for a moment, but tell your nurse straight away if you feel any pain.
Yes, softening the wax with drops for a few days before your appointment makes removal easier and more comfortable. Ask reception which drops to use.
No, irrigation with water is not suitable if you have a perforated eardrum, grommets, or certain other ear conditions. Microsuction is usually a safer option in these cases.
Most appointments take around 15 to 20 minutes in total, including a check of your ears before and after.
Sometimes wax is too hard or impacted for irrigation alone. If this happens, your nurse will talk you through other options, including microsuction or further softening before trying again.
