Ear microsuction, gentle and dry.
Blocked ears cleared under magnification with a fine suction tip, performed on-site by our GPs with no water or syringing involved.
Ear microsuction
A build-up of ear wax can leave your ears feeling blocked, muffled or uncomfortable. Microsuction clears the ear canal using magnification and a fine, gentle suction tip, so your GP can see exactly what they are removing. Because no water is used, it can be an option for people who have been told to avoid ear irrigation.
- Removal of ear wax and debris from the ear canal
- Performed under magnification for a clear view
- No water or syringing involved
- Can be an option when irrigation is not suitable
- Adults and children assessed case by case
- Medicare rebates apply where eligible

Your procedure
Your GP will first look in your ears and ask about your symptoms and any history of ear surgery, infections or a perforated eardrum. You then sit comfortably while a small suction tip is guided into the ear canal to lift the wax out.
Most people notice clearer hearing straight away. If the wax is very hard, your GP may suggest softening drops for a few days and a return visit to finish clearing the ear.

Booking your appointment
Book a consultation and let reception know it is for ear wax removal, so enough time is set aside to check and clear one or both ears.
- Mention it is for ear microsuction when you book
- Tell us if you have had ear surgery or a perforated eardrum
- Use softening drops beforehand only if your GP has advised it
- Let us know if you wear hearing aids
- Allow time for both ears to be checked
If your GP finds an infection, a perforation or anything else that needs attention, they will explain the options and arrange treatment or a referral where needed.

After your procedure
Your ears may feel a little sensitive, or sounds may seem louder than usual, for a short time afterwards. This is normal and settles quickly.
- Avoid cotton buds, which push wax further in
- Keep water out of your ears if your GP advises it
- Contact us if you notice pain, discharge or reduced hearing
- Book again if your ears block up in future
Some people build up wax more quickly than others. Your GP can talk to you about ways to manage it between visits.
- Advice on managing ear wax at home
- Regular removal for people prone to build-up
- Referral to an ENT specialist where appropriate
- Hearing concerns reviewed and referred if needed
Ear microsuction is one of the procedures our GPs perform on-site, alongside skin excisions, wound care and other minor procedures.

Questions patients ask us most
Most people find it comfortable. It can feel a little strange and sound noisy, but it should not be painful. Tell your GP if anything feels uncomfortable and they can pause.
Syringing uses water to flush wax out. Microsuction is a dry method that removes wax under direct view, which can make it suitable for people who have been advised to keep water out of their ears.
It can usually be done within a standard appointment. Very hard or stubborn wax may need softening drops and a second visit.
Children can often be treated, depending on their age and how comfortable they are. Mention your child's age when you book.
Medicare rebates apply where eligible. Reception can explain any out-of-pocket cost when you book.
Only if your GP has advised it. In some cases, softening drops for a few days beforehand make removal easier.
