Skin cancer checks
Regular skin checks help catch skin cancer early, when it is easiest to treat. Our GPs examine your skin from head to toe, look closely at any spots you are concerned about, and use dermoscopy to assess anything that needs a closer look.

Your skin check
Your GP will ask about your sun exposure, family history and any spots that have changed, then examine your skin under good lighting, including areas that do not see the sun.
Most checks take around fifteen to twenty minutes. If a spot needs a closer look, your GP will use a dermatoscope on the spot there and then.
Booking your skin check
Anyone can book a skin check, whether it is your first or you are due for a review. Let reception know if you have a spot you are concerned about, so extra time can be set aside.
- Book a consultation for a skin check
- Mention any spot that is changing or new
- Bring details of previous skin cancers or family history
- Wear clothing that is easy to remove
- Avoid fake tan or makeup on the day if possible
If you are at higher risk, such as fair skin, a history of sunburn or a family history of melanoma, your GP may suggest more frequent checks.
After your check
If everything looks normal, your GP will let you know when to book your next check. If a spot needs further assessment, they will explain the options clearly.
- Normal results explained, with a recommended recheck date
- Photos taken of moles being monitored, where useful
- Referral arranged if a specialist opinion is needed
- Sun protection advice provided
If a biopsy or excision is needed, this can often be arranged onsite or through a referral, depending on what is found.
- Excision or biopsy arranged where appropriate
- Referral to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon where needed
- Pathology results followed up and explained
- Ongoing monitoring plan agreed with your GP
