Skin excisions
If a spot, lump or skin lesion needs to be removed or tested, our GPs can often do it on-site. Excisions are performed in our procedure room under local anaesthetic, and the tissue is sent to pathology so you know exactly what it was and whether anything more is needed.

Your procedure
Your GP will first assess the area and explain why removal is recommended, what the procedure involves and how the wound will be closed. The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, the lesion is removed, and the wound is usually closed with a few stitches and covered with a dressing.
Most small excisions are completed within a single appointment, and you can usually return to normal activities straight away. Your GP will let you know if you should avoid exercise or anything that stretches the wound while it heals.
Booking your excision
If a spot has already been flagged for removal, or you have a referral, book a consultation and let reception know it is for an excision so the right amount of time is set aside.

- Let us know about blood thinners or allergies
- Wear clothing that gives easy access to the area
- Allow a little extra time for the procedure and dressing
Some larger or more complex lesions are better treated by a specialist. If that is the case, your GP will explain why and arrange the referral for you.
After your procedure
Your GP or nurse will explain how to look after the wound and when your stitches need to come out. Stitch removal and dressing changes can be done here at the practice.
- Keep the wound clean and dry as advised
- Contact us if you notice redness, swelling or discharge
- Pathology results usually take one to two weeks
- Follow-up appointment for stitch removal and results
If a result shows something that needs further treatment, your GP will talk you through the options and next steps.
- Further excision arranged if needed
- Referral to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon where appropriate
- Sun protection advice provided
- Pathology results kept on your file for future reference

The area is numbed with local anaesthetic first, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Some tenderness afterwards is normal and usually settles within a few days.
Most excisions are closed with a few stitches. Your GP will tell you when they need to come out, which is done at a short follow-up appointment.
Usually one to two weeks. Your GP will contact you or arrange a follow-up to go through the result.
Any excision leaves a small scar. Your GP will take care to keep it as neat as possible and explain how to look after it while it heals.
Medicare rebates apply where eligible. Reception can explain any out-of-pocket cost before your procedure.
