The Mirena is a hormonal intrauterine device that provides contraception for up to eight years and can also help manage heavy periods. Our GPs perform removal and, where appropriate, same-visit replacement on-site.

Your appointment
Your GP will explain the removal procedure beforehand and check whether you would like a replacement inserted at the same time. Removal itself is usually quick, with mild cramping similar to period pain.
If a replacement is being inserted, this happens straight after removal in the same appointment, so you are not without contraceptive cover in the meantime.

If your Mirena is due for routine replacement rather than being removed by choice, we will track this so you are not caught out by the device expiring.
Looking after yourself afterwards
Mild cramping and spotting are common for a day or two after removal, whether or not a replacement was inserted. Most people return to normal activities straight away.
