What an iron infusion involves
An iron infusion delivers iron directly into a vein for people who are iron deficient and have not been able to correct it with oral supplements or diet alone, or who need their levels restored more quickly than tablets allow. Your GP will confirm the diagnosis with blood tests and a written prescription before any infusion is booked, and will talk you through why an infusion is the right option for you.

During and after your infusion
You will be seated comfortably while the nurse inserts a small cannula and the iron is given slowly through a drip. Most people feel nothing more than the usual pinch of a needle, and you are welcome to bring a book, headphones or company to help the time pass.
Mild side effects such as a metallic taste, light-headedness or aching at the injection site are common and usually settle quickly. Our nursing team monitors you throughout, and for a short period afterwards, before you are cleared to go home.
Booking your infusion
Start with a standard consultation so your GP can confirm you are iron deficient, rule out an underlying cause, and write the prescription. Once that is done, reception will book your infusion appointment at a time that suits you.

Iron infusions are one of more than twenty services available on-site at Carindale Doctors, so if a blood test uncovers something else that needs following up, your GP can usually manage it in the same visit instead of sending you elsewhere.
Looking after yourself afterwards
Most people can return to normal activities the same day, though it is sensible to take it easy for the rest of the day if you can. Drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous exercise until you are feeling back to normal.
- Mild fatigue or soreness at the site can last a day or two
- Contact us if you develop fever, chest pain or breathing difficulty
- Your GP will review your follow-up blood test results with you
- Further infusions can be arranged if levels have not fully recovered
If anything feels wrong in the days after your infusion, call reception and we will fit you in rather than have you wait for your next scheduled appointment.

Questions patients ask us about iron infusions
No referral is needed. Book a standard consultation with one of our GPs, who will arrange blood tests and, if an infusion is appropriate, write the prescription and book you in.
A Medicare rebate applies to eligible patients. Ask reception when you book so they can confirm any out-of-pocket cost before your appointment.
Most appointments take between 30 and 60 minutes, including a short monitoring period afterwards before you head home.
Some people notice a metallic taste, mild light-headedness or soreness at the injection site. Our nursing team monitors you throughout and will let you know what to watch for afterwards.
Most patients can drive themselves, but if you feel light-headed during your infusion it is worth arranging a lift home, just in case.
Energy levels often improve within one to two weeks, though your GP will arrange a follow-up blood test at 4 to 6 weeks to confirm your iron levels have recovered.
