Implanon insertion and removal
Implanon is a small contraceptive rod inserted under the skin of your upper arm, providing effective contraception for up to three years. Our GPs perform insertion, replacement and removal on-site, in a straightforward procedure done under local anaesthetic.

Your procedure
Before insertion, your GP will confirm Implanon is the right choice for you and answer any questions. The procedure itself involves numbing the area with local anaesthetic, then inserting the rod just under the skin using a specialised applicator.
Removal is a similarly quick procedure, and if you would like a replacement inserted at the same time, this can usually be done in the same appointment.
Booking your appointment
Start with a consultation to discuss whether Implanon suits you, then book a separate appointment for the procedure itself if you decide to go ahead.

If you are removing Implanon without wanting a replacement, let reception know so your GP can also discuss ongoing contraceptive options with you.
Looking after yourself afterwards
Keep the small dressing on the insertion site for a few days and avoid heavy lifting with that arm in the meantime. Most people return to normal activities immediately.
- Mild bruising or swelling is common and settles quickly
- Contact us if you notice signs of infection
- Effectiveness begins immediately if inserted at the right time in your cycle
- Replacement is needed every three years to stay effective
If you experience irregular bleeding after insertion, this is common in the first few months and usually settles. Let your GP know if it continues or concerns you.

- Ongoing review available if side effects concern you
- Switching to another method is straightforward if needed
