Background

Driver medicals, done properly.

Heavy vehicle and commercial licence medicals completed to the national Assessing Fitness to Drive standard, along with the driver medical Carindale drivers need for a standard car licence, with same-visit paperwork wherever possible.

01 The service

Commercial driver licence medicals

Holding a heavy vehicle, commercial or public passenger licence means meeting the medical standards set out in the national Assessing Fitness to Drive guidelines. Our GPs conduct these assessments on-site, checking vision, hearing, cardiovascular health and other factors relevant to your licence class, and complete the required paperwork at the end of your visit wherever possible. We also conduct the standard driver medical Carindale residents need for a car licence application, renewal or older driver assessment, alongside our commercial and heavy vehicle checks.

  • Assessed to the national Assessing Fitness to Drive standard
  • Covers heavy vehicle, bus and other commercial licence classes
  • Vision, hearing and general health checked in one visit
  • Paperwork completed and provided on the day where possible
  • Suitable for new applications and periodic renewals
  • A fee-for-service assessment, as it is work-related rather than Medicare-funded
  • Standard car licence medicals also available, not just commercial classes
The service
02 What to expect

During your assessment

Your GP works through a standard checklist covering your medical history, current medications, vision and hearing, blood pressure, and any conditions that could affect safe driving. Bring your glasses or hearing aids if you use them, so you are tested as you would actually be driving.

Let reception know which licence class and form you need when you book, so the right amount of time is set aside.

If a further test or specialist opinion is needed, such as a vision or sleep study referral, your GP will explain why and arrange it, and can usually still complete the parts of the form that do not depend on it.

03 Getting started

Booking your medical

Bring the correct form for your licence type, either one your employer or licensing authority has given you or one you have downloaded yourself. If you are not sure which form applies, mention it when you book and reception can help you check.

  • Bring the correct assessment form for your licence class
  • Bring glasses, hearing aids or other aids you normally use
  • Bring a list of current medications and medical conditions
  • Let reception know if this is a renewal or a new application
  • Allow extra time if a vision or hearing test is required

Because we are a full general practice, any follow-up such as blood pressure management or a referral for further testing can usually be handled in the same visit or a quick follow-up, rather than starting again somewhere else.

This is a fee-for-service assessment. Ask reception for the current cost when you book.

04 Good to know

After your assessment

Your GP lets you know at the end of the appointment whether you have met the standard, whether further tests are needed, or whether any conditions apply to your licence. Keep a copy of the completed form for your own records as well as for your employer or licensing authority.

  • You will be told the outcome at the end of your appointment
  • Any conditions or restrictions are explained clearly
  • A copy of the completed form is provided for your records
  • Renewal timing depends on your licence class and age

If your circumstances change, such as a new diagnosis or medication, it is worth checking with your GP whether it affects your licence conditions before your next renewal is due.

  • Set your own renewal reminder, as we do not always receive notice from the licensing authority
  • Medical records are kept with your file for future assessments
  • The same GP can complete future renewals for continuity
  • Contact reception if your licensing authority requests more information

Commercial driver medicals are one of more than twenty services available at Carindale Doctors alongside your everyday GP care, so your regular health checks and your licence medical can often be coordinated together.

Questions drivers ask us most

Yes, these assessments take longer than a standard consultation. Let reception know when booking so enough time is set aside.

No, driver and commercial licence medicals are fee-for-service and are not covered by Medicare, as they are not related to treating an illness.

Bring the correct form for your licence class, photo ID, a list of your current medications, and any glasses or hearing aids you normally use.

Your GP will explain any conditions or restrictions that apply and what further tests or reviews might help, rather than simply failing the assessment.

Yes, we also complete medicals for taxi, rideshare and other passenger transport driver authorisations.

This depends on your licence class, age and any existing conditions. Your GP will tell you when your next review is due at the end of your appointment.

Yes. Beyond commercial and heavy vehicle assessments, we provide the driver medical Carindale drivers need for standard car licence applications, renewals and older driver checks.
